07 Dec The Declaration of Independence and the Military
Here’s what the Declaration of Independence says about the role of the Military… “That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men”. Since the military is a part of the government, the military has the same obligations as the rest of the government to secure our rights to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. The military should not abuse its powers and thereby become destructive to our Liberty and pursuit of Happiness. The Declaration actually complains that King George used his military in abusive ways several times, including keeping large, standing armies, being forced to quarter troops among civilians, and allowing soldiers to act above the law.
