07 Dec The Declaration of Independence and Religion
The Declaration of Independence states our rights come from a Creator, or a higher being. While this does not establish a particular religion, it does state our nation was founded upon the idea of a deity who has granted us all inalienable rights. It is therefore possible to acknowledge a God without establishing a religion.
Here’s what the Declaration of Independence says about Freedom of Religion… The Declaration clearly acknowledges a supreme being. You can find reference to God in the first sentence, “…the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God…” The second sentence references right endowed by “the Creator”. But, it does not reference any particular theology. The Founders recognized that a God existed based upon philosophy and logic, but didn’t state how, or even whether people should worship that God.
