07 Dec The Declaration of Independence and International Trade
The Declaration of Independence was in favor of international trade. One of the grievances expressed against King George III was, “For cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World.” However, it does not address “Free Trade” specifically. The second sentence does declare that governments are instituted among men to secure our rights and that government gets its power from the consent of the governed. That means that any government’s obligation is first and foremost to its own citizens since it is those citizens who give government its power in the first place. Thus, it is the responsibility of government to ensure any and all trade practices with other nations benefits its own citizens.
