The Declaration of Independence does not directly address the Minimum Wage issue. However, the Minimum Wage can be viewed through the lens of our inalienable Rights to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Government’s job is to secure those rights. But, notice that government’s job is not to guarantee one’s happiness, but simply to ensure that the pursuit of happiness can occur. So, the role of government should not be to unfairly support one group’s pursuit of happiness over another group’s pursuit. When analyzing the role government is playing in ensuring a minimum wage, it is necessary to ask if government is supporting one person’s pursuit over the rights of another person to pursue their happiness.
